“Enhancing lives with personalized vision care”
Dear Karen,
We are in the middle of a beautiful summer. I know I’ve been enjoying the long sunny days and hope you are too. But don’t forget to protect your eyes from damage caused by too much sun.
I’ve included 2 articles explaining why and how to protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. And don’t forget the kids. Their eyes are more susceptible to damage from the UV rays than an adult’s eyes.

Prevent Damage to your Eyes from the Sun     Pterygium

The red bump featured in this picture is called a pterygium. It is often caused by too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation to the surface of the eye.
We are pretty good about remembering to put on sunscreen to protect our skin from UV damage, but often forget to put on sunglasses. Research shows that cumulative exposure to UV rays can increase the development of cataracts, macular degeneration and eye cancers.

Protection for the Sun

Eyes and Sun

Wearing sunglasses is recommended for prevention of macular degeneration, pterygium, pinquecula and cataracts. Continued exposure to UV radiation can cause serious harm to the eyes and age them prematurely.
Whether it is cloudy or sunny, put on your sunglasses.  If you wear transition lenses (the lenses get dark when you go outdoors) or any of the high-index materials in your prescription eyewear, you have UV protection.
