This is the first of a 3 part series on eye drops that are relatively new to the market. The first eye drop I’ll discuss is available over-the-counter, without a prescription. The other 2 eye drops require a prescription.
Lumify Eye Drops
I hope this readily available eye drop will replace previously purchased – “get the red out,” eye drops. Many people are looking for a way to get rid of red eyes that can be caused from dryness, allergies, smoke (tobacco or marijuana) and tired eyes. The older drugstore products, like Visine, will whiten the eyes, but contain a chemical (tetrahydrozaline) which can cause rebound redness and dependency.
Lumify hit drugstore shelves 4 years ago. It reduces redness as quickly as 1 minute after application and can last up to 8 hours. The active ingredient in Lumify (brimonidine), selectively constricts veins in the eye, increasing the availability of oxygen to surrounding tissue, thereby whitening the eye and reducing the potential risk of side effects.
Identifying the cause of eye redness, then eliminating risk factors is the first line of defense. This may include managing ocular allergies, treating eyelid inflammation, removing eye make-up every night, and using contact lenses properly. Unfortunately, the source of ocular inflammation isn’t always easy to identify or treat. And then there are unpredictable situations such as: wildfire, sleepless nights and long hours at the computer that contribute to eye redness.
Lumify eyedrops offer a safe remedy for occasional and chronic red eyes. It’s also a better alternative to tetrahydrozaline containing eyedrops ,so purge your purse and medicine cabinet of old “get-the red-out” eyedrops.
